Why did I get a CP303 notice from the IRS?

The IRS now sends CP303 notices to taxpayers when their information is used for accessing IRS applications, including the irs.gov website, with the ID.me third-party identity verification service.

The notice is to ensure you know that your information was used to access IRS records, and not someone else pretending to be you.

  • If it was you that accessed said services, you do not need to do anything.
  • If you did not access those services, immediately call the number on your notice.

What happens if someone else used my personal information to access IRS online services?

Immediately call the number on your notice. Once the IRS verifies your identity, they will disable your online account.

Useful tips

  • The IRS will never ask for your username, password or security codes, period.
  • Never share your username, password or one-time security codes
  • Use unique passwords that cannot be easily guessed.

  1. I filed my Income Tax on 19 JANUARY 2022 and I have not received any answer to my many request for my status of my Refund check. For the past 3 months I have been requesting the status of my return, with no luck. All you say is I can not give you the status of my return. The telephone number you have listed I can not call from CANADA, which I have said many times before. As of 22 APRIL 2022 I do not know the status of my Income Tax Refund check, can you help me, before it goes int the 4th month?

    • Hey Robert,

I couldn’t find your name in our client list, but can still provide some basic information that might help.

Visit https://www.irs.gov/refunds and click “Check My Refund Status” to check the status online. You will need to provide your SSN/TIN, filing status, and expected refund amount.

If the information entered matches a return the IRS has accepted, a projected timeframes is provided on the resulting page.

If you did not provide bank account information on the return for direct deposit, refunds take much longer to arrive.

If you paper filed, takes even longer to get processed and the IRS is still backlogged.

If you efiled over a month ago, contact a local office by visiting https://www.irs.gov/help/contact-your-local-irs-office

The phone numbers provided using that tool can be dialed from outside the US. As for the zip code, enter one for a US city near the border. If no results are provided, increase the search radius.

      Hope that helps 🙂

    • So I belive I verified my self with id me on October 22 after receiving the letter on September 28 and it still says return is still bieng processed what does this mean

      • Unfortunately the IRS was still backlogged during 2022 while processing 2021 tax returns.

If you efiled your returns, and the status still showed pending after a few weeks, that is usually indicates your return requires additional review for verification purposes. The most common cause we’ve seen for this stemmed from Economic Impact Payments and related credits for claiming they were not received when they were. EIP caused a lot of confusion with taxpayers who were not sure if or when they received their stimulus since there were multiple rounds of payments issued across two tax years.

If you paper filed your tax returns, it takes significantly longer for returns to be processed. We generally advise not to expect paper filed returns be processed in less than 3-6 months, and it has seemed to take much longer since the original onset of COVID delays.
